The Enchanted Bath: Bath Rituals and Recipes
Published in Hardcover by Peter Pauper Press (September, 1997)
Authors: Susan Hayden and Katharine Barnwell
Average review score:

Water and Power
Susan Hayden takes the gift book format to new heights with The Enchanted Bath. The writing is brilliant, informative, mythic and soothing. Coupled with a packet of bath salts (or not) it is the ultimate intelligent hostess gift.

Charming and Informative
I found this book to be both charming and informative. Having become interested in the whole idea of home spas and aromatherapy to soothe away the stress of everyday living, the ideas in this little book are refreshing ways to reach for peacefulness. The illustrations are pleasant and add to the relaxing, calming effect of the subject of the bath. This book is a great gift idea for friends to share.

Simplistic, yet informative
Hayden's writing style follows an easy-to-read format that is rather refreshing, for she still manages to provide a wealth of information. What I truly enjoyed was how whimsical the content and artwork is. If seeking a light but valuable bath book, one to be read in one sitting, this is for you!

Meditations on the Apocalypse: A Psychospiritual Perspective on the Book of Revelation
Published in Paperback by Element Books Ltd. (December, 1994)
Author: F. Aster Barnwell
Average review score:

What a Find!
In a disciplined and inspired work of analysis, Barnwell has made connections that reveal the mysteries of the Book of Revelations. His intensive study of ancient symbolism, coupled with spiritual devotion and prayerful inquiry, allowed him to stitch together the patchwork of images into a powerful and cohesive message. Seekers of every faith will find information in this book on the rare process of transformation we are exhorted to accomplish in the Book of Revelations. It ain't about the end of the world, folks. It's an inside job. But you knew that....

Very enlightening and much differ from bible scholars views
Mr. Barnwell captured the meaning of life in its essence towards spirituality. Some of the statements and sentences needs to be more simplified like the Bible of different translations. I believe there's a lot to be absorbed from this book. I wish there were enumerated suggestions for the souls (besides prayers), from this book instead of insights.

A "Must Have" for art lovers
I bought this book because it was about an impressionist painter not so well-known in this country. I'm so bored with the popularity of Monet, Cezanne and Van Gough in this country. This book gives us a glimps of another impressionsist painter and described his life and work. I was amazed to find out that Terlikowski knew and was friends with many famous painter of his time, including Modigliani. The book is full of beautiful glossy paintings of the South of France and other places around the world, including Morocco. In Poland, where he was born, Terli has become an estalished painter and many of his paintings are in the National Museum of Warsaw.

How could you miss him?
Go to the south of France. There one can see the light he saw. No words can explain.

The Arcana of the Grail Angel
Published in Paperback by Anthroposophic Press (31 December, 1999)
Author: John Barnwell
Average review score:

the tarot and the hermetic tradition
This is an important work of Medieval History, focusing on the transmission of Christian Hermetic and Neoplatonic philosophy from its roots in the Alexandrian academy and the school of St. Denis, through the golden age of Arabism until its flowering in the Age of the Troubadours as the Grail Legend.
Using an unique structure, the Trionfi of the Florentine Tarrocci, as a framework, the author traces the diffusion and survival of Christian Neoplatonism in Europe during the period of Papal dominance over Western thought, a period when its proponents and practioners wrote of necessity in a veiled, "twilight" language of symbol.
There is much here of medieval Occult Philosophy, as brought to light and revivified by the work of the late Dr. Rudolph Steiner, upon whose philosophical system, Anthroposophy, or Spiritual Science, the author greatly depends.
A series of useful diagrams at the end of the book prove a valuable digest of the teachings in question.

The Art of Playing Mythos the Cthulhu Collectable Card Game: A Tome of Arcane Knowledge

A Guide to Playing the Mythos Card Game
This book contains miscellaneous information about the Mythos collectible card game. It contains: the rules of the game, a FAQ, a short play and deck construction guide, a sort of designer's notes on the game, background information on selected cards, rules for solitaire play and creating your own adventures, a complete spoiler list for the limited edition of the game and lists of card attributes and requirements for completing adventures.

As a collector and player of the game, I found the designer's notes on the history of the game and the design philosophy to be especially interesting. Also useful to me are the short notes on the background of selected cards and the rules for creating and scoring your own adventures. The pictures of the selected cards are black & white with a paragraph of background info. Buyers should also note that there is an updated version of the rules of the game at the Chaosium website.

Asheville, a View from the Top

Authors: Lisa Bell, Lynda McDaniel, and Tim Barnwell

A wondeful coffee-table book on Asheville, NC
The book purports to provide just that -- an overview of a beautiful city nestled strategically between the Blueridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains. The reader gets a glimpse of Asheville's rich heritage -- the down-home hospitality of its downtown and the mystic beauty of its mountains; the folk arts and crafts of its multi-ethnic community and the splendid out-door recreational and tourist attractions offered to its visitors; its numerous cultural resources, including art museums, galleries, live theater, symphonies, as well as a description of its growing economy with its developing communications networks, its manufacturing and technology industries, its business, financial and real estate industries, and its educational and health care centers.

The book will warm the heart of readers who are interested in visiting Asheville on a holiday as well as those considering a move to the area for more reasons than its temperate climate and cultural amenities. Though this work is a typical over-sized coffee-table book, its authors (all residents of Asheville) ably provide a well documented text to complement the outstanding picturesque, colorful photography by Tim Barnell. As a recent retiree having moved to the area after a year of careful research about Asheville, I love this book -- the only one on the topic with fabulous photographs as well as well written supportive textual materials covering a variety of topics. Excellent reading and viewing for someone who might consider moving to Asheville, a city frequently rated as one of the top ten places to retire! It has been just rated #1 in AARP's May-June, 2000 issue of Modern Maturity, for the best small city in the USA which to retire!

Continuum: The First Songbook of Sweet Honey in the Rock
Published in Paperback by Contemporary A Cappella Publishing (24 March, 2000)
Authors: Sweet Honey in the Rock and Ysaye Barnwell
Average review score:

Continuum Continues Sweet Honey's Tradition
Continuum receives high marks for the quality content. It contains 4 songs from each of Sweet Honey in the Rocks five most prolific songwriters. Many of the songs are favorites of mine, and it includes chants, freedom songs, and songs of worship from several of their albums. The book is written in a friendly, easy to use style. I could get together with several of my friends, or a whole choir, and have all the information I would need to perform their music. It also includes information about Sweet Honey's members, which helped me better understand where their music comes from. This book would be extremely helpful as a resource for anyone who works or dabbles in music and wants to promote Sweet Honey's message of love and justice.

Morocco: Crossroads of Time (Musical Expeditions)

A Multimedia Introduction to Moroccan Culture
I was fortunate to visit Morocco. I learned much despite being ill-prepared. Travel books and itineraries tell One what (s)he will see, but not what to observe.

This is an excellent introduction to Moroccan culture. The music CD's twelve selections are a representative sampler. The accompanying 64-page hardbound book discusses each selection in detail. The book also includes beautiful color photos and translations of Moroccan lyrics and poetry. The authors discuss Moroccan history, geography, literature, and Islamic life within Morocco. A discography and bibliography suggest additional musical and textual Moroccan references. There even is a recipe for Mint Tea, the cornerstone of Moroccan hospitality!

I recommend this music CD and book to anyone interested in Morocco, but *especially* to those preparing for their first visit.

The Pilgrim's Companion: A Handbook for the Spiritual Path
Published in Paperback by Harper Collins - UK (July, 1992)
Author: F. Aster Barnwell
Average review score:

Practical teaching as well as inspiration.
This book is a handbook as the title suggests, in the sense that it contains simple, practical instruction for the application of spiritual attitudes and practices to everyday life. Written from the perspective of the author's personal experience as a seeker "on the path" it is a sensible and easily read composite of esoteric thought, conventional religious teaching, psychology and common sense. Learning of Barnwell's concept of "Sacred Space" is alone, worth the price of the book. The workshop format of the last section would be a great help to many. This one teaches as well as it inspires.

My honors ESL students will love it.
I have been searching for a book that incorporates not only essay writing, but also research paper writing for a group of ESL students that have their eyes set on medical or law degrees. I have chosen it as a text for next semester (January 2001) because I have found it to be a "complete" text, which meets the needs of this special group.
